What is the Lowell Citizen Police Academy?
The Citizen Academy is a series of eight classes sponsored by the Lowell Police Department. It is held to educate citizens about the Lowell Police Department, its organization, operations, and role in the community.
Participants are instructed by department supervisors as to the responsibilities of their various units. Citizens gain an understanding of the challenges facing law enforcement in today’s world. Students are given the opportunity not only to learn but to offer ideas and solutions. The goal of the academy is to develop a unique partnership between citizens and their police department that benefits both.
Who Can Attend?
The Lowell Police Department Citizens Police Academy is offered to all Greater- Lowell citizens 18 yrs or older. Participants MUST have a clean arrest record.
Background checks are conducted on all applicants. Candidates must be able to commit to this class schedule. Only one excused absence will be allowed in order to graduate and receive a Certificate of Completion.
When is the next Citizen Academy?
The next Citizen Academy begins October 12th and runs thru November 30th, 2011.
The academy is held at the Lowell Police Training Facility, 99 Middlesex Street (next door to the Registry of Motor Vehicles). Classes are held for eight weeks at 6pm-9pm each Wednesday night.
Topics may include: Criminal Law, Criminal Investigations, Juvenile Law, Domestic Violence, Family Services, OUI and the Intoxilizer, Motor Vehicle Law, How to be a Good Witness, Crash Reconstruction, Community Response Team and Gang Unit, Special Investigations, Enhanced 911, CPR and First Responder, Identity Theft, Internet Safety, Occupant Protection, Hate Crimes, LPD Volunteer and Intern Program, LPD Auxiliary Officers, and more…
