D.A.R.E. Summer Day Program

The Lowell Police D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program:

Lowell- West Sector   The D.A.R.E. program provides assistance and services to the youth of our city throughout the school year and in the summer. The LPD has a number of full-time D.A.R.E. Officers who provide core D.A.R.E. curriculum to fifth and sixth graders throughout the city. In addition to education, the D.A.R.E. Officers coordinate sports programs such as the Flag Football and Wrestling leagues, which have been recognized with community awards. The D.A.R.E. Program also sponsors bowling and movie outings for young people.

D.A.R.E. Officers are located in Lowell High School and have formed strong partnerships with the High School Peer Leadership Program. D.A.R.E. Officers are involved in Peer Leadership on a regular basis and sponsor a number of training seminars and activities related to tobacco, alcohol and drug abuse, violence and suicide prevention. D.A.R.E. Officers also work collaboratively with the Lowell Healthy Life Skills Program, the Lowell Tobacco Control Office and other agencies to sponsor Tobacco-Free Poster and Rap Contests.

Student Police Academy

The Lowell Police Department, with its D.A.R.E. and G.R.E.A.T. Programs, sponsors a Student Police Academy at the beginning of the summer for students throughout the City of Lowell. Through the generous support of the Lowell Police Department and a number of grant providers, the program is able to provide a number of services to our youth. We would like to thank our sponsors for their continued support. This academy provides these students with an experience similar to those that attend a real police academy, but they are taught classes that are geared more towards their age group. Cadets are taught classes in such areas as criminal law, gang awareness, motor vehicle investigations, alcohol awareness, hate crimes, and animal cruelty, as well as participating in physical fitness, and line formations. More valuable, all cadets are CPR certified which they can implement in their jobs, schools, and neighborhoods.

The Student Police Academy is provided for children entering the seventh, eighth, or ninth grades through out Lowell.
