Citizens' Police Academy

Who? The Citizen Police Academy is offered to Greater Lowell citizens who are interested in learning more about how their police department operates and the policing challenges facing the City.

What? Participants in each session commit to 30 hours of training over a 10-week period. During the sessions, participants learn about different aspects of the police department. The Citizens Academy classes are held in the Lowell Police Department Training Facility at the Cross Point Towers. The instructors are Lowell Police Officers and other members of the law enforcement community. This academy is coordinated and run by the department's Family Services Unit. Instructors have experience teaching at regional police academies and at department in-service training.

Why? Naturally, the purpose of the Lowell Police Citizens' Academy is to educate citizens about the operations of the Lowell Police Department. Through this education, increased positive relations between the police and community will develop. The goal is to create a growing pool of responsible, well-informed citizens who have the potential of influencing public opinion about police practices and services. Citizens will gain an understanding of the problems and challenges facing law enforcement and will have an opportunity to offer comments and ideas regarding solutions. Since it's inception in 1995, over 400 people have graduated from the Citizen's Police Academy

Anyone interested in attending our upcoming classes or any future academies, should contact Safety Officer Paul Corcoran or Volunteer Coordinator Sharon Callery at the Pawtucketville Precinct at (978) 937-3210.
